Frequently asked questions
Unlike mass produced commercial soaps, natural soaps contain no chemical hardeners (which is good news for your skin!) so they do take a little extra care to stop them from going squishy. They're best stored on a very well drained soap dish or on soap magnets between uses to let them air dry and stop any moisture coming into contact with them. We've found that anything that causes moisture to gather or pool under the soap will cause your soap to turn to soapy goop - (even safix soap rests don't let the air circulate enough).
Please take a look at the FAQ on soap care to resolve how best to store your soaps to stop this happening in future. It's really worth experimenting with soap storage until you get a dish/ magnets/ string or other method that works best for you.
If you do find yourself with gooey soap then don't worry, not all is lost! There are a few things you can do to rescue the situation:
- Scoop up any very gooey soap and mix it with water in a reusable pump-action soap dispenser. Tin Shed Soaps are all castille soaps (majority extra virgin olive oil) so they make a lovely smooth and bubbly liquid hand soap too when they dissolve into water. For best results mix at a ratio of about about 1:5 soap to water.
- Any semi-solid soap can be scooped into a reusable sisal scrub bag or similar and hung up to dry in a well-ventilated position away from moisture. The longer you leave the soap to dry, the harder it will get and if you want to use it straight away then the sisal bag with soap in it makes an excellent natural mild exfoliant!
